The Buttercream Debate

Hello lovely readers.

I wanted to talk about the big bad buttercream debate…….

I’ve recently had some reels do really well on social media lately, huraghhhh. But what happens when things go viral is that all sorts of people get on board including those that are not really interested or understanding of what they are looking at.

It is also a lovely big open wide window for people to say whatever they like, which can happen on any kind of post or video in the social media world.

Very recently an argument started, on a comment where a follower stated something along the lines of

“YUK, too much frosting, heart attack on a plate”

” Nice to look at but disgusting to eat” (Have you ever eaten my cakes….urrrrr no!)

Now I’m ok with negative comments and everyone is allowed an opinion of course, but this comment then led to about 50 more comments where people were arguing with one another and then just being rude to each other or defending my little cuppy cakes 🙂

Now what you have to remember is humans like me put their heart and soul into their crafts/businesses. There are lots of things I don’t like, but I would never comment like this on someone’s business page. If it’s not your thing then just move on, or consider your comment a little better, like

” These look lovely but I’m not keen on too much buttercream”

“Gorgeous cakes but I find frosting too sweet.”

Its so funny what people feel they are allowed to say when they don’t have to actually say it to someone’s face. Now don’t get me wrong I’m not upset or offended at all, it just got me looking at my product and thinking a little. Because I get a lot of orders, comments on how delicious and amazing they are from all of my customers and I’ve even eaten my own cupcakes would you believe it! I thought they were pretty scrumptious too.

The thing is, to me this is art and food all rolled into a beautiful little bunch of flowers. A floral cupcake is just not visually the same as a pack of 6 with a blob of frosting and some sprinkles from the supermarket, albeit they might taste nice.

You are purchasing a totally different product here. I am making a cupcake look like a flower!!!

Some flowers are also going to require a little more buttercream than others in order to achieve that look.

I try my hardest to make them look like real flowers using this medium. Which is slippy slidy butter, sugar and a bit of vanilla pretty much (and my super method and years of skill of course)

So you are buying into yummy cake, food, art and something stunning and beautiful all at the same time. It enables you to give someone a gorgeous and unusual gift that they can eat, and at which point you hand over this gift they hopefully see flowers….. then you say “They are cakes”

And they say ” NOOOOOO, you are kidding me, really…I thought they were flowers”

That’s what’s so cool about this edible craft. The element of surprise and delight.

Not everyone likes cake, pretty much everyone likes flowers. Some people love the icing, I mean really love it and they will lick it all off and leave the cake, the ‘Lickers’. Then you get the ‘Pickers’, the ones that sort of pick at bits of icing and cake not sure which to go for most. After that its the ones who cut the cake part in half and sandwich all the buttercream, the ‘Sandwichers’

Of course there’s the ‘Shovellers’ who shove it in all at once, or the ‘Disecters’ slowly taking the cake apart bit by bit wondering if it really is edible at all. Finally the ‘Flickers’, the ones who love a bit of cake and icing but maybe don’t want all the icing, so quite simply flick a bit off. (That’s me!)

The ‘Dieters’…. shhhh I wont mention. They are hiding in the cupboard….eating cupcakes.

So there you have it. Its my job and I love it, everyone that purchases my cupcakes love them too. Whichever way you choose to eat yours do it with love and above all be kind. If you cant comment nicely don’t comment at all.

Buttercream is sweet. Everything in moderation. I’d love to know your thoughts!

Over and out.

Rachel x

I think those who criticize someone else’s talent and hard work should be ashamed. I just purchased one of your online courses and am very impressed with your skill. I have a lot of practicing to do!

Your cakes are truly amazing and such a work of art. You are so talented and I love to create cupcakes one day as good as yours. I’m just over the boarder and thinking of attending a master class. It’s a shame that some people can be so rude, they just don’t understand how much effect goes into creating edible art. (Btw I’m a Flicker and my husband’s a Shoveller)😊

De reacties vertellen meer over de persoon die ze schrijft dan over jouw cupcakes.
    Het zijn kunstwerkjes.

In my opinion, the cake always has been and always will be a mere vessel for the icing 😃 Cake to icing ratio is ON POINT. Designs are unbelievable. Every time I look at your page it makes me want to cry a little bit with joy. Form and Function perfection ❤️

Rachelle, you work and your tutorials are wonderful. I do tend to find that people that are negative, criticis and try to put others and their work down are either jealous or unhappy with their own lives and try to bring others down. Just shows you what type of person they are. I feel sorry for these small minded people.

Rachelle you are an inspiration and I hope that one day I can achieve some wonderful work like yourself. xxx

You don’t need to justify /explain yourself. You provide beautiful cakes and, given the positive comments you receive, your clients love them too.

Switch the commenting off and know you are exceptional at what you do. I love your online tutorials and if I lived in England, I would love to simple your cakes.

Don’t stop doing exactly what you are doing…

When you’re eating and/or admiring a beautifully crafted item of culinary art you have a choice regarding how much actually passes your lips. Take what you want from a decorated cake and leave the rest because there is no obligation to clear your plate. Under these circumstances, the cake is the stage and the embellishments are the main players.

These little floral works of art are first and foremost ‘Special’ cakes, a feast for the eyes, and should be regarded as such.

Beautifully written! I especially liked your comment about people dissing on someone’s professional business website. That is so despicable! What is their goal? Who cares if they like buttercream or not, some people like chocolate and some people don’t. who cares? And worst of all, they have never even tasted your product! It’s like going on Amazon and reviewing a skin cream when you’ve never even tried that skin cream! Makes no sense. I would like to talk about your incredible cupcakes! I live across the pond in the USA. I started following you a few years ago when I was blown away by a picture I saw on Instagram and could not believe it was not a real flower! You are a true artist, your work is absolutely mind bogglingly exquisite! You were the sole inspiration for my seeking out someone who lived near me who could make cupcakes that looked like flowers for my mom’s 90th birthday party. As much as I love cakes and cupcakes, to be honest, I could care less how they tasted because they were the centerpieces! My guests were all blown away! They honestly were the highlight of the party because no one could believe they weren’t real flowers! on top of this, they tasted out of this world! And guess what? If you don’t like a lot of frosting on your cupcake then just scrape it off! It’s not brain surgery! And if you don’t like cupcakes then why are you commenting? I’m so sorry somebody had the nerve to say negative comments about your beautiful products that are lovingly created by a true artist. And what a sad statement that people got into social media arguments and were not nice about it. I will never understand this. It just makes people feel bad. That old adage if you don’t have something nice to say then don’t say anything at all should definitely apply to social media. Thank you for giving me many smiles through the years looking at your absolutely stunning works of art that I wish I could taste!

No reason for someone to be rude imo. Some people think social media gives the right to say anything. I think they’re beautiful cupcakes. I would happily eat all the buttercream because I enjoy it, almost more than cake itself.😍😅

I’ve been around a long time and seen many beautiful works of art when it comes to cakes. You are the absolute best. I too wish I lived close to you so I could enjoy a few. Sorry someone had to be so rude. Like you said most would never do it to ones face.

I really don’t understand some people. If they think the ratio is wrong for them why don’t they use common sense and cut down the amount of work they do on the cake. I have purchased several tutorials from you and love them and the hard work you put into it all, for others to learn a new craft. I am in my late 70s and to poor health, this has given me an out look on life that I enjoy. We live in an older age group community and I give my cakes away.

I looked, loved, wanted with the thought that I wouldn’t likely eat ALL the buttercream. As you say, part art, part food. Or simply arty food

Rachelle, I found your site recently. I started cake decorating many years back, those times there were not cupcakes decorated like today. I can’t in my wildest dreams decorate such beautiful flowers as yours, I wish I could, but I enjoy looking at your work and I am trying to do a flower or two, but I really admire your work. I am from South Africa and will in the near future order an online class for some of your flowers. I do cake decorating as a hobby and to give friends and family some gifts.

I love your cupcake and art, and have your courses. I try and some of my practice runs I will take to work where some people won’t touch it because it is too much icing….. it is what it is their loss.
